The Betans and the Vor

Title:  The Betans and the Vor
Mythos:  Vorkosigan Universe
May be sung to the tune of:  The Orange and the Green (itself written to the tune of The Rising of the Moon, or possibly The Wearing of the Green)
Owner of the original:  Unclear, possibly The Irish Rovers (Orange and the Green), John Keegan “Leo” Casey (1846-70), the "Fenian Poet" (Rising of the Moon), unknown (The Wearing of the Green)
Written on: March 2008

Background:  There are few strong parental figures in science fiction.  Miles Vorkosigan's parents deserve a song in their honor.

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

My mother is a Betan, and she loves equality
Me da is an aristocrat, a proud Vor lord is he
Now such a match is strange indeed, but they formed a love to last
And when Vorruyter met his end, 'twas then the die was cast

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

She came back to Beta, but she couldn't stand it there
So they married on his planet, 'neath the trees and cool night air
She made him be the Regent, and he ruled with aplomb
Until Evon Vorhalas tried to kill them with a bomb

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

I was gestating quite safely when the soldiers captured me
Mom went on a daring raid and boldly set me free
She'd paid too much a'shopping in the capital, she said
And upon the table laid Vordarian's bloody head

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

My mother is a hero, my father's one as well
When Count Piotr wouldn't have me, Da told him to go to hell
Although his mind was gentle, filled with memories that scar
He let his foes and rivals fear the Butcher of Komarr

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

When Aral was the Regent, no matter what the crunch
No matter what the crisis, he would take a two-hour lunch
And while the counts and ministers would wonder what he did
He'd lie upon the carpet and play with his crippled kid

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor

With that sort of parentage, I'm sure that you can see
why I decided outer space was just the place for me
The best of both's inside me, and neither I'll ignore
The way they act on Beta nor the manners of the Vor

Oh it is a bigger mixup than has ever come before
My mother, she is Betan, and my father is a Vor
