Mythos: V for Vendetta
May be sung to the tune of: Dark Lord V-

Written on: Summer 2006

Background:  Dark Lord V- teaches an interesting storytelling lesson using the Harry Potter and Star Wars worlds, showing how similar the coming-of-age story elements of each are.  I was more interested in seeing how many words beginning with "v" could be crammed into one song (I got 24 in this one).

The Bottle of Malort

Written on: Fall 2006

Background: At Pennsic 40, our camp (Grey Gargoyles) had, for some reason, a bottle of Malort (a particularly foul type of liquor made even worse by the fact that it'd been sitting out in the sun for days by the time these events transpired). One of the ladies of the camp offered it to a gentleman passerby, who drank a sip and immediately spit it out in disgust. He turned out to be the King of An Tir.

One evening at the Pennsic War...Collapse )

The Betans and the Vor
Title:  The Betans and the Vor
Mythos:  Vorkosigan Universe
May be sung to the tune of:  The Orange and the Green (itself written to the tune of The Rising of the Moon, or possibly The Wearing of the Green)
Owner of the original:  Unclear, possibly The Irish Rovers (Orange and the Green), John Keegan “Leo” Casey (1846-70), the "Fenian Poet" (Rising of the Moon), unknown (The Wearing of the Green)
Written on: March 2008

Background:  There are few strong parental figures in science fiction.  Miles Vorkosigan's parents deserve a song in their honor.

9:42 pm
At It Again
Title: At it Again
Mythos: Vorkosigan Universe
May be sung to the tune of:  At It Again
Owner of the tune:  Andy Stewart.  This is definitely under copyright, and the "may be sung to the tune of" is just a suggestion.
Written on:  Sometime spring 2007

Strawberry Beds
Title: Strawberry Beds
Mythos: Firefly/Serenity
May be sung to the tune of:  The Ferryman*
Owner of the tune:  The original was written by Pete St. John.  I've written him to ask for permission to use this tune.  He refused, and suggested that I post my lyrics asking some melody writer to work with me.
Written on:  Fall 2005

Background:  Somewhere I have a whole slew of firefly alternate ending songs.  This one, with Simon, River, and Kaylee being the last aboard, draws its inspiration from that scene in the pilot episode with Kaylee and the strawberry Shepherd Book gave her, where we first get a sense of just how grim life is for the folk of the Black and the Outer Moons.

The Hills of Serenity Valley
Title: The Hills of Serenity Valley
Mythos: Firefly/Serenity
May be sung to the tune of:  The Hills of Connemara
Owner of the tune:  Although it was sung by Gaelic Storm, and there are references to copyrights by Paddy Schmidt, other citations indicate that it's "trad" and the above copyrights refer to specific arrangements/recordings.  This may be one of those incorrect labelings as "trad."
